The purpose of this page is to provide a monthly status report over the course of a year on the BMR project Camaro. This will be a detailed buildup of the entire process so that the viewer can follow along and see just what it takes to build a streetable 8 second F-body. This is not the case with the BMR project car and if you follow along with the buildup you will see that the car will retain a full interior including power windows and seats, stock wheelwells no tubsand most important - a complete, off-the-shelf BMR suspension!

That's right, this car will run 8's with the same suspension that is available to any BMR customer. This car is being built solely to explore the potential of our current product line and the joy of a mph pass on streetcar suspension and 10" tires has nothing to do with it:.

Chevy Camaro -Turbo Charger - F-Body with Afterburner Part One

This car has been a test mule for many products and has been taken apart more times than I can remember.

The interior will remain stock except for gauges and an NHRA legal chrome moly rollcage. As of this writing, the car is still being driven while parts are accumulated. The engine being used for this buildup is a twin turbocharged SB2 small block Chevrolet that will produce somewhere around horsepower. All product installations will be fully documented in this article with picture updates regularly. Rear suspension will consist of a BMR Xtreme duty chrome moly torque arm, chrome moly tubular control arms, chrome moly adjustable panhard rod, weld-in relocation brackets, boxed subframe connectors, and BMR dragrace anti-rollbar.

BMR rear springs will be combined with Hal 12 way adjustable shocks. Front suspension will consist of a BMR tubular K-member, tubular upper and lower a-arms and Hal coil over adjustable shocks. The first thing we will address in this buildup is the rear end since the factory 10 bolt has durability issues with even stock motors. A Ford 9" was chosen for it's superior strength and versatility. Moser and a few other companies build a 9" Ford rearend with all the required brackets to make it an F-Body bolt-in.

You see, Jonathan was still a full-time college student at Sam Houston State when he purchased his Camaro. It was his daily driver and only mode of transportation for many years, racking up a ton of miles as he drove from Houston to Huntsville every day.

Once he graduated from school with a degree in Construction Management, Jonathan was able to purchase himself a new truck, thus retiring his treasured Camaro from daily driver duties. This turbo system utilizes our custom cast stainless steel exhaust housings featuring V-band inlet and V-band Outlets. The housings are extremely friendly to work with over a traditional 4 bolt design and has much more adjustment during installation. We have a number of turbo upgrades available and you can go with CNC Billet wheel upgrades, ceramic ball bearing as well as larger exhaust housings if you are going to be shooting for higher hp or larger cubic inch engines.

On the passenger side of the block, he simply flipped the manifold so the exhaust flange was located towards the front instead of the rear. With the exhaust flanges cut off, hang the manifolds and loosely install a couple of bolts just to keep the manifolds in place. Getting the pipes to the T4 flanges just right is a matter of eyeballing, measuring, and cutting carefully.

Craig leaves the pipes a little long on both sides so he can trim to fit. The passenger side manifold with the turbo feed pipe tacked in prior to welding. To get the height right for the placement of the turbo T4 flanges, Craig spans the engine compartment with a straightedge and measures with a tape measure, but you can use a 2X4 or a broom handle. For this particular installation, Craig used portions of two 90 degree bent pipes to make the T4 flange adapter pipes.

Placing these pipe sections up next to the manifold, he moved them around until he got the look and location he wanted and marked them with a Sharpie where he wanted to cut.

On the passenger side he also used the slip-fit section off another pipe section to extend the pipe just enough to balance out the turbo height.

He then slowly squeezes the open end of the pipe into an oval to match it with the turbo flange. He recommends taking your time with this because you can easily squeeze too far. He then tacks one side in firmly and uses the vise and a drift punch to get the fit as close to perfect as possible before running beads around the circumference of the joint. Craig does this in steps as it allows him to heat the pipe up and stretch it into the corners of the flange to get a better fit.

Too easy-just to slap on a N. We were very interested in the STS rear-mounted turbocharger system, though, and Rick Squires explained the ins and outs of the setup and investigated the project's future.


That's why we began with a slightly larger turbo than is normally provided in the system kit; the T76 snail is a proven power maker that would allow a bunch more engine upgrades without running out of air. While it is possible to do the install in hours without complication, we are very particular about fit and appearance, so we spent three afternoons on the turbo install alone. The car has a lowered suspension, and it didn't take long to see this was going to be an issue.

No matter how we oriented the pipe over the rear axle, it either hit the gas tank or looked like it would drag on the ground. We shortened the over-the-axle pipe almost 2 inches, which required cutting and welding. With the Hooker after-cat system we put a three-bolt flange on our hot pipe that would allow us to hitch the turbo to the existing after-cat pipe. Even after several fitting checks, we got the turbo assembly too far to the driver side, creating more issues.

At this point, it was much easier to modify the tailpipe and air-cleaner hanger than to change the turbo hot pipe. Once the installation was complete we loaded a tune- up that would allow the introduction of extra fuel required while in boost. Rick recommended Nelson Performance, which helped by sending the initial baseline tune to be programmed into the HP Tuners, but instead caused the motor to surge with poor idle quality.

We changed the sensors, injectors, and intake manifold, but solved nothing. Putting several hundred miles on the car in this state brought up other concerns. In a hard rain, spray from wheelers was almost too much. Within minutes the car quickly fell on its face and came to a crawl in the emergency lane.

After an hour we could go, but the car quickly came to another halt. Waterproof sock notwithstanding, rain was the issue. When we disabled the MAF sensor, the engine ran perfectly, but we had to drive without putting the turbo into boost mode. We'd read about the new software and were determined to tune the car ourselves. The engine ran flawlessly from idle to wide-open throttle and felt stronger than it ever had.

Now the car drives like the stocker. Until you mash the go pedal. Then you better grab the steering wheel with both hands.
